Approximately a year after Borana Gadda System banned female genital mutilation (FGM) practice across Borana territories, the effect of stigmatization still remains a major challenge to the girls who escaped the forbidden knives.
The many reasons for cut in Boran for FGM was cultural, being cut is a rite of passage for young girls though for some it’s more hygienic and that a girl or woman should be flat, rigid and dry.
Furthermore, the cultural believe of cleanness is causing unrest among girls in Marsabit county where some are neglected by the suiters on the occasions of not undergoing FGM.
